Yes indeed! A good temperament is very important. All dogs need to be stable in order to behave well within the "family" pack. But what is temperament? Perhaps it is not really what we think. Temperament is a dog with a stable set of rules within its mental frame work. What it is not is a neurotic, self serving being. When we discuss temperament, we must remember the history of the dog, and what traits that history exhibits. High strung is not temperament, rather it is behavior. Biting is not temperament, rather it is behavior. Are there sociopath dogs? No!Dogs who let us say, continually kill chickens, are doing nothing more than their genes dictate - chase, capture, eat. However in this modern age, they no longer have to "eat" as we provide for their needs. Such dogs either have no "pack" leader to dictate their behavior, or more disturbingly, have taken over the role of "pack leader within their environment. What is more disconcerting is that the numbers of "family pets" displaying anti-social behavior is increasing. What we fail to realize is that these animals are just doing what dogs do when they are A) the pack leader of the humans or B)they have no 'pack leader" that reinforces stability within the pack by asserting each members place in the pack. Until we (the superior human being) come to understand this, the numbers of negative dog incidents we hear on the TV and read about in the papers will continue to rise. That is exceedingly troublesome to those of us who do understand. It is therefore our responsibility to ensure that the banned breed lists are stopped by educating all to the benefits for the dog and man of truly understanding how Behavioral Training works!(copied with permission from a series of articles written by KT copyright 2005).“Bo” says - A Good Temperment is of Great Importance:
